How is porcelain stoneware made?
Porcelain stoneware tiles are produced by firing a mixture of ceramic clays, feldspar, kaolin, and sand—raw materials that are finely atomized into a homogeneous powder suitable for pressing. The firing process takes place in long kilns (up to 140 meters) at temperatures ranging from approximately 1150°C to 1250°C, with the material gradually brought up to the maximum temperature. It is held at temperature for about 25–30 minutes and always cooled gradually to room temperature. The firing process creates a ceramic-like effect (vitrification of the body). This imparts the material's characteristic durability, wear resistance, water resistance, and frost resistance. Standard manufacturing technologies produce porcelain stoneware tiles ranging in size from 5x5 cm to 180x180 cm and in thickness from 7 mm to 20 mm, available in polished or matte finishes. The base mixture is light beige but can be colored during the atomization process; the resulting product is known as "full-body" or "colored-body" porcelain. The final product boasts excellent characteristics suitable for installation in both residential and public spaces.
What are the trends in interior design?
In recent years, so-called "large-format tiles"—tiles of substantial size—have become a massive hit on both European and domestic markets. Options range from the popular 60x120 cm formats to massive 120x260 cm and 100x300 cm slabs—all just 6 mm thick. The undisputed leaders in their production are ITT Ceramic, Arklam, and Kutahya Ceramic—brands for which Forma Banya serves as a direct importer. Naturally, wood-effect porcelain stoneware remains the most sought-after choice, though there are also special collections featuring metal, cement, brick, and Calacatta marble effects.
